Oculus GO won't charge / Advice for new headset?

My Oculus GO won't charge. I've tried different cables and different power sources (PC, mains). The orange light won't come on. If it does, it won't take a charge. The unit won't power on at all. Anyone had this issue?

I might have to get a new headset. Any suggestions? The Quest 2 is supposed to no longer require a Facebook account sometime this month. Anyone know the date, yet?

Are there any other brands/models worth looking at?

I only use the headset for two things:

Porn. I have been somewhat satisfied with 4K on the GO. Does the experience particularly improve with increasing resolution? After all, it's still VR, and VR is still dogshit. (One reason I'm not worried about everyone joining the "Metaverse" is simply that VR is a dogshit experience, and a pain in the arse to set up and use.)
Watching YouTube lying flat in bed looking towards the ceiling. A headset is great for that. I'm surprised hardly any apps on the GO were optimized for that experience. Usually, getting the picture to actually be above me required a lot of faff. Do any of the other brands allow watching YouTube while looking vertically upwards?

BobbyBadass You mentioned it, but I would personally suggest the Quest 2. I've used quite a few different headsets over the years, but the Q2 is just a straight-up solid pick all around. Great visuals, don't need to be tethered, simple as hell to use, etc. Do hate that the price just jumped $100 recently, but even with that it's still a great deal imho.

Sorry to hear about your lost G, I lost my gear vr few months ago 🥺, was a sad few weeks, I had it since 2017 with a s7 edge and lastly a s10+, stupid Samsung updated my phone automatically and after that my gear no longer was supported. Smh , felt like a gf broke up with me, I swear like my stomach was turning noting up. It was crazy. I was pissed too. 😤

I bought a quest 2, took me a while to get use to it, but after a while it turned out good 👍

Plus with the pass through coming later with slro gonna be hell fun!

Earlier I was using it, (its available on q2) , it was crazy cuz I had it to where my body was blending in with the males naked body during a lay cg, dude I swear his dick look like an extention off my body and the female was there literally at my lap sucking D, was looking hella crazy.

Get you quest 2, at first you might feel uneas with cyz you been on your use to ur GO.

I'm not into games. But I use the boxing games for exercise.

Also on vrporn site it's got sum sex games you can mess with, they aight but still cool to mess with.

I don't think you can go wrong with a q2 G, most affordable right now, was cheaper last month but they bumped the price up. Smh

I wouldn’t advise this as a new headset or replacement to the Go, but I think the SLR tutorial underplays the value of GearVR. Sure, technical competency is required to get the thing operational, since it is neither supported by Samsung nor Facebook, officially, but it isn’t bad and serves as an acceptable compromise, given inflation and these trying times.

The controller is much better for media than Quest 2, since the system is very minimalistic and only useful for watching videos. (A volume rocker!)
It keeps your porn safe from prying eyes, like a girlfriend who might want to play with a standalone VR system. Your phone offers lots of encryption options.
Storage limits on the device aren’t much of a concern. It’s very easy and cheap to pop in a 500 GB MicroSD ($30) so no worries about 64/128/256 GB limits.
Newer Samsung devices (like the S20) have a very high pixel count and density, so although the images aren’t as crisp as Quest 2 the films are watchable. (Same resolution as Go, better colours.)
I prefer aspheric lenses to Fresnel. The former is better for watching films, the latter for gaming.

And of course the best advantage is that you can buy one second-hand, for considerably less than the Quest 2 since Facebook added $100 to the price of that product just last week!

i just bought a q2 for my kid...at the cheaper price (by two weeks)....they raised it up a 100 bucks. probably still the one to get with most people on here with it and able to help.

i have the q1 and the optics on q2 are supposedly 50 percent better.

[deleted] I loved the gearvr! with my s10+ was a better picture then my s7, I was able to watch up to 6khd but I was fine with 4k, it was simple and lasted longer battery wise then the q2, if i could I'd still use it. You have to get s9 and down to use it now. I have a s9 but I gotta get the screen fixed, q2 is great but just extra then my gear was. I had to buy a face gaurd cuz out the box it was very uncomfortable on my face after like 30 mins, plus the q2 has that sweet spot where if u don't have it right on the eye things look blurry, and the light glares omg don't get started.

The q2 takes time to get use to if u coming off the same headset after a few years.

My q2 with a new facegaurd helped but if your house is hot like mine sometimes it slides a bit down my face, sum buy the new elite headstrap, but I shouldn't have too, the q2 should be comfortable right out the box. For me it wasn't.

And like him what if my q2 stop charging, I have a warranty but later on after it runs out what then, I gotta buy another one for a higher price, yeah I was good with my gear, q2 can be good I enjoy it now but my gear was fine as is. 👍 ...screen door was hardly noticeable on the s10. 🤷‍♂️

Nope. You just need to boot an old UI. I downgraded an S20 (second hand, local market) to a version of One UI 3.1. Not only is the battery life better but the whole experience has improved. Samsung downgraded their software because the old phones actually have better hardware than the post-2020 models.

Want the details on how to get that GearVR operational again? It's a fun side project if you have a free hour.

I agree that these devices tend to slip down the face and heat up too fast. To addressed the latter I just turn on airplane mode. Of course this means I can't stream, but with half a terabyte of local storage I can rely on that as an alternative.

By read, do you mean read e-books using a book reader on your VR headset? That is something I want. Does Quest 2 provide that? There was no PDF or e-book reader on the Oculus GO at all. Opportunity missed IMO.

I was talking about the quest 2 slides down my face when it's hot in my room due to the summer...

But with my gearvr I never had that problem, it never over heated and the picture was always the same no matter where it was positioned on my face unlike a quest 2 with its sweet spot any minor adjustments to the head set you can get blurred vision, it's not bad or horrible just noticeable unlike my gear was.

Revert my phone back? Hell yeah I'd like know, I watched a few YouTube videos but they seemed confusing so I just ended up buying the quest 2.

It's a little tricky but I'd be happy to help.

Here's the tutorial I used. It will allow you to reinstall all the VR software that Samsung was forced to remove due to the breakdown of the Meta deal.

Location Services is a pretext for data theft and personalized advertising. You can turn it off after you've installed the software and got it working 😉 (Just turn it on when Meta occasionally requests it.)

What's great about this is that you can use GearVR with the S10, S10+, S20, S20+ and other models (one of my friends has the 10 so I can guarantee that it works for that model too). GearVR was designed for the S7 to S9. With the ODIN trick you can use it with the current phones. And the models before S21 have ultra dense screens for great resolution. The processor on the S10 should be able to decode without glitches most of the films on SLR. (It has problems with the Original files for VRAllure and Wankz, but I've experienced no problems with the Originals from any other studio -- except StasyQ, which won't load due to codec incompatibility).

One more thing: You'll want to go into the Developer Options, after you've finished, to turn off auto-update. When this is done your phone won't download updates or insist on updates, but it will tell you that updates are available in Settings (which you can just ignore 😉 )

The "sweet spot" may have to do with the Fresnel lenses. GearVR uses aspheric lenses. Very high-end headset like Varjo use aspheric lenses. Mid-range systems like Quest 2 use Fresnel. Fresnel are lighter and better for gaming and have fewer distortions to the side of the lens. But they have more god-rays. Some people (like me) prefer aspheric lenses (I don't play VR games and use the system for watching films). High-end systems can adjust for the distortions from aspheric lenses.

Idk why they stop the s10 from working with the gear, when I got my s10 the sales guy told me s10 and s10+ would be the last phones that will work with the gear, he never said they would take the gear from me 😒

I seen a video on YouTube this guy used his phone and a headset to play steam vr games, he was playing beat Saber too with hand tracking, just makes me mad cus these phones have potential to be great vr devices just like a quest.
I'm hoping the vr phones make a come back cuz it was very convenient for media previewing.

Only down fall bout a phone was you need to keep it scratch free and not to crack the screen or else you'd see them scratches in the headset, lol I took good care of mine 👍

Reading at that resolution would be a challenge.

Project Cambria has a major design flaw for our purposes visible from the prototypes. The battery is at the back of the user's head, which discourages use on a bed. Most casual users don't engage in VR at a desk. They watch films and stream. No one wants to rest their head on a battery.

One interesting headset that had potential, were it not for the price, was Vive Flow. It has no controller, unfortunately. But for its weight and portability the cut in resolution would be fine.

on my Q1...i can adjust it on my head and kinda get a clear image some of the time

so maybe Q2 would be a major upgrade on the Q1 in that department... reading-wise and better-looking image for porn watching.

I had no difficulties with the tutorial, but the downgrade took an hour for the software and somewhat longer to change the settings of my apps.

There is one small regression. One UI 4 added support for NTFS. So if you need NTFS for work you have to use third-party software for that. It only blocks direct access to NTFS drives, so like memory-sticks formatted for NTFS.

Facebook / Meta killed GearVR because it got too good. I don't think many folks noted the differences between the early models and the later ones. The Controller is amazing, much better for media than Oculus 2 stuff (why see hands when you are watching films?) The phones also have fairly powerful and versatile processors.

Some folks said that Gear wasn't popular because it required the user to remove their phone from the case and have a clean screen. To me that isn't much of a concern.

I'm broke and probably would get an Oculus 2 if I were in America and did not have to contend with exchange rates and a low quality grid system as part of my country's infrastructure. But I have looked closely at Oculus 2 and find there to be about equal advantages to disadvantages for Oculus 2. The resolution is higher but the file security is much lower and the controllers are designed for gaming.

I think the heatwave killed it. I left it unplugged for two days then plugged it into my PC. Held down left volume control and power button for 30 seconds. Then it could boot up.

Weirdly, I did try all of that many times, but on this occasion it decided to wake up. Voodoo.

Quest 2 is very good for low cost and no high end PC is needed

If money is not a factor, then you'd need a high end PC, but I'd recommend the Pimax 8KX until the Pimax 12K or Pimax Crystal come out

An HP Reverb G2 (PC needed) is a decent upgrade from the Quest 2, and may be among the sharpest for the time being (besides going for a thousands of dollar Varjo Aero which has a poor field of view), but Pimax 8KX beats it everywhere else in image quality besides a small sweet spot in the center where the G2 may have an advantage. The Pimax 8KX has a much larger field of view (it's adjustable through the Pimax Tool app) and it's more consistently clear beyond the sweet spot I would say.

The Pimax 8KX has about double the pixel count (4k; 3840x2160 per eye) over a much larger field of view, so it doesn't feel like you're so restricted or looking through a scuba mask.

The Pimax 12k will be as it sounds.. the 8KX on steroids, even more further ahead of the competition in field of view and clarity.. but expensive (near $3000), if that's an issue. Same with the Pimax Crystal, in that it will be expensive (above $2000).. a slightly above normal field of view.. but have a very sharp image (42PPD pixels per degree vs 23PPD for the G2, 18PPD for the Quest 2, or 12PPD for your Quest Go). No screen door effect.. much higher detail)

If money is no object then why not go all out and get the Varjo Aero? Excepting the Varjo VR-3 and XR models that's the best headset on the market.

In terms of value for money Quest 2 was the best option until a couple of weeks ago. Now, maybe second-hand is the way to go for mid-range purchasers. I'd wait, though, for a few months to see Cambria and maybe pick up a secondhand Quest 2 as bargain when that appears.
