Can we get more detail on Cardboard app EOL?

Going through my email i might have missed the notification in Nov that the cardboard app will no longer be supported. Can you clarify that as of Jan 1st it will truly stop working?

I have an annual subscription but can't justify the $500-600 CAD prices in Canada for a VR set. Does anyone else have any recommendations or alternatives? Will DevoVR still work? Would I have to download the videos and use a still working Cardboard app to view?

r1ckyspan1sh We are waiting for a good reason to deprecate it. We don't touch it the way it's now, but at any moment app might become incompatible with site functionality and we will have to shut it. No updates are coming for sure.

I can't speak for SLR but usually with this type of thing the app would be no longer supported meaning that it won't receive any further attention from the developers. That means no new enhancements/features and no bug fixes. Unless they have a reason to intentionally disable it (unlikely in this case), the app would continue to work just the same as before. If you choose to continue to using an unsupported app then you just have to understand that it could stop working at anytime. If that happens, it won't be fixed and the developers will basically tell you (nicely, of course 😀) to get fucked if you ask them about it.
