  • Difference between SLR 8k and original 8k?

Not sure if correct tag. Can someone please explain to me the difference between original 8K that you can download and the one that is recommended to download on the site?

There is usually twice the size difference. Does it have lowered framerate or something to compensate for such drastic size difference? Wondering which one I should rather download.

Btw this is not exclusive to 8k, a lot of videos have "original", which is bigger, while both having the same resolution according to the site.

I am using reverb G2 btw.

Kulman The Original files are the files we get from the Studio. Often these are lossless (not RAW, maybe a few exceptions.). We compress them 'lossy'. In theory there is loss in quality*, but during normal playback and usage you will not notice much, if any, difference.

*We try to limit the loss in quality to 'loss in data', this can still greatly preserve the quality.

Rakly3 I have a similar question: Today Sinsvr has a new 5K video and the original video is smaller than the SLR 5K conversion. I've seen this a couple other times as well. Is there any benefit to the SLR version over the original?

I'd also like to see a 6K SLR version become a standard size for 7K and 8K videos. If someone really wants the 7K or 8K video, they can download the original 7K & 8K version you already offer IMHO, but that's a side note.

In visual quality no. But the SLR versions are guaranteed to work with our app on the officially supported devices. Which isn't always the case with the original file. ie Oculus Go/Quest1&2 won't play .mov and might give issues with .mkv in our app. Some encoding techniques and settings are also better suited for streaming than others. SLR is a streaming service.

This is kinda related to the previous thing. We will still reencode the original files to ensure compatibility. Devices and systems that can play 6K in theory should also be able to play 7k and 8k. There are exceptions but that would then be for a very specific & rare reason.

Rakly3 Thank you for explaining why. That makes sense. My reasoning for wanting 6K standard is a matter of wanting the best ratio between file size and visual quality as I find even the SLR encodes at 7K/8K to be bloated in file size compared to a 6K when realistically I'm not going to notice the difference. I had never considered compatibility being an issue.
