  • Feedback please; what headset is best?

SO I know 'best' can be subjective so I'll clarify; I want the most realistic/immersive experience.

I'm currently using a Rift S on WIndows 10 and DEO VR/SLR app with an RTX3060 and, while the experience with this setup is mind blowing, I'm curious to know what will give an even more realistic/immersive experience.

Quest2 is recommended by SLR and is currently the way I'm planning to go, but I would like to know if anyone would recommned a different device and/or setup over the Q2?

tl;dr what headset gives the most realistic/immersive experience?

sickpuppies Quest 2 will give you sharper and overall more vibrant visuals that the Rift S. The field-of-view (FOV) of the Quest 2 will basically be more or less identical to the Rift S, just with a better overall image quality. There's also the currently-experimental 120hz of the Quest 2, whereas I believe the Rift 2 caps at 80 or 90.

For the price point, you really can't go wrong with it and it would be a noticeable improvement, plus the benefit of portability, less bulk while wearing, etc.

Personally, I use a Valve Index. The visuals are not quite as sharp as the Quest 2, but I am happy to trade that for the extra 20 or so degrees FOV the Index gives me over the Quest 2. I've tried most of the Oculus headsets at this point and tend to find them a bit "tunnel-visiony" for my taste. Plus the whole "I don't really want to support facebook" thing for myself, but not everyone cares about that and to each their own.

If money is no object, then the most "realistic" current option would probably be the Pimax 8K X. Fantastic resolution, but in addition it provides up to 200 degree FOV vs the Quest 2's roughly 110. And when it comes to total immersion, FOV plays a huge role in it. But it's also over 3x the price of a Quest 2. No idea whether an RTX 3060 might struggle with the output to it though.

justsomedude101 That Pimax sure is tempting, though it is a lot of money. Can you imagine what the tech is going to be able to do in another 10 years?

THanks for your thoughts and suggestions. I had considered the Index, as well as the Vive and Reverb, but was attracted to the Q2 for the quality and portability (and price). I'm ok with the trade off between price and handing my data to Facebook so no issues there for me (respect your decision too though).

Just so I understand the extra 20 degrees of FOV essentially increases the periphery of what you can see? More details on the edges? It doesn't directly affect what is right in front of you, per se? I've noticed that in some vids I'm getting a bit of an exagerated fishbowl affect (which makes some of the models look quite exotic, or even alien sometimes - not saying I mind that lol).

      Thanks again.

      Cheers.

sickpuppies Any extra FOV will give you more around all the peripheries (including the top and bottom), but yeah- mostly on the left/right sides, which makes sense since we see far more degrees horizontally than vertically. And no, FOV does not affect what's directly in front of you, though obviously some headsets like the Quest 2 and Reverb G2 will be sharper/etc, which is dependent on resolution, pixel type/count and whatnot.

With any VR headset it's a bit like looking through some binoculars: what you're looking at directly ahead will be clear, but a bunch of your vision to the top/bottom/sides will be black where there's no screen/video input. The Index gets you a bit larger of an area that you can see all around and a bit less black than Oculus headsets. The Pimax 8k X give you a huge amount of area that you can see and very little black.

Basically just do this and make the circles gradually bigger and that's the gist.

No idea on the exaggerated fishbowl effect you're coming across- my best guess is either older scenes from like 2017 and earlier (which tended to have this effect), or your VR player is defaulting to the incorrect dimensions for playback of some files (playing a 200 degree scene as 180 degrees, etc).

But yeah, for the "cost for what you get" you really can't really go wrong with the Quest 2.

justsomedude101 I totally get what you mean. I watched a couple of vids and I really noticed the effect (and now I can't unsee it haha).

I've ordered the Q2 so I'll see how that goes.

          Cheers.

doublevr Was that review ever written? That blogpost was written a while ago, and not sure if it's still uptodate?
