  • Can't use higher than 60fps on Valve Index

Tryed streaming, the player try to load then go back to H264 60fps.
Tryed downloading, H265 60fps works fine, but if I try to go for more frames the video slow down (would say to 50%) and unsync with sound.
Already tryed to tweak headset fps cap, nothing change
Any suggestion ?

I tryed pretty much any resolution in streaming, GPU frametime is too high too often and the video end up stuttering at any resolution past 1920p and I can't use more than 60fps. When I download, I can use any resolution without the issue but when I try using higher framerate it slow down the video as said earlier.
I'm currently using a 2060 in replacement to a 2080 super that died recently.

popolzz What is the resolution of your monitor(s) and their refresh rate?
Try disabling a monitor or lower the settings.

      I got a 1440p 144fps monitor, and disabling it doesn't change anything.

For higher resolution I can see my GPU frametime suffering and reprojection starting, so that's clearly the problem, but I still can't get why I can't use more than 60fps

I managed to find myself a 3070, I'll get back to you after some test with it

I meant any secondary monitors. You are probably running that 1440p @144Hz on HDMI. lower the settings, 1080p @60Hz or so and check if it gets any better. If you are using 10bit lower it to 8bit. And/Or use DisplayPort instead of HDMI.

Your frametime suffers because you already are near the card's limitations.
        7680x4320 @30Hz is the same load as 3840x2160 @120Hz or 1920x1080 @480Hz

Tryed 1080p 60Hz, nothing changed, and I'm already using a DisplayPort and only 8 bits
Got my 3070, and I can now use 2160p without stuttering, but still can't go for more than 60fps on streaming

ok, do you mean the 90fps files don't work, or you're not getting the option?

          8 days later

          So ;

Streaming : Can use any resolution, but stutter at any point past 1920p, below works flawlessly
Can't use anything else than 60fps, the options are appearing but when I try them the player goes
          back to 60fps

Download : Can use any resolution, it don't affect my GPU/CPU usage and work flawlessly.
Can't use any framerate higher than 60fps, if I try to go for more the video slows down and the image
end up delayed from the sound.

          Hope this helps

EDIT: I just noticed I already said all this lol. I'm sleepy, my bad. 💤

Streaming, sounds like you are streaming h264 and/or not decoding on the GPU

Download: Limitations of your system? Which GPU and display(s) setting(s) are you using aside from the headset? Especially a HDMI connected display.
Also important, what ratings do your cables have?

The RTX 20 series maxes out on 4K60Hz HDMI and 8K60Hz Display Port or 4K120Hz Display port.
Combine multiple monitors (incl headset) and you are eating away at resources from eachother.
If you're decoding an 8K video, you are still bound by these limitations even if you use lower display resolutions. Unless you are using ViewPort.
Can you check with a 5K Viewport stream? That one should work fine based on the information in your post.

I'm using a newly acquired 3070 with a pretty high tier rig (ryzen 7 3700x, 16go 3666MHz and a good mobo) with only one 1440p 144Hz screen using Displayport other than my headset. I'm using the Valve Index with the stock cable, I don't know his rating.

In streaming, everytime I try to use h265, even h265 60fps, the player load for 1 to 10 secondes, then go back to h264, whatever I try.
I tryed the SLR app and DeoVR player, same result.

And about Viewport, I'm not sure how to test that with the Valve Index, isn't it for mobile headsets ?

PS : Sorry for my potentially ankward english. Baguette grenouille here

              Hi popolzz

This sounds more like a codec issue, the RTX30-series should not have an issue with this setup.

Have you installed K-Lite Standard and HEVC?

Sadly Microsoft no longer distributes HEVC for windows for free. It's $1/1€
I suggest trying the K-Lite first before spending money on the HEVC codec.

K-lite seemingly has no effect at all (tryed Standard version), I may try HEVC later

I remember starting a test file for h265 that worked fine, might not be codec sided, I don't know

                popolzz SteamVR and DeoVR?
Check the SteamVR setting for some setting about 'Smoothing'. Turn this off for video. In the DeoVR app there is also an option to switch to DirectDraw.

Could you try playing the video in the Windows app 'Movies & TV'. Not sure what it's called in french but it comes installed with Windows by default. (NOT Windows Media Player)

So I tryed to use a H265 file with "Movies & TV" (which is "Films & TV" in french) and Windows asked me to buy HEVC codec. Streaming on the SLR App now work wonferfully using any resolution or framerate, thanks a lot 🙂

There used to be an option forcing the player to stay in stereo mode even with the UI up, and I can't find it back, is it normal ?
