Browser Playback under Linux

Hello everyone,

I have recently started to explore the wonderful world of Linux. So far the experience has been amazing, but there is one thing that is driving me nuts in the last few days. I can't play the full resolution, or at least more than 1080p on this website.

I am using CachyOS with Brave Origin Browser (GPU is AMD Radeon RX 9070 GT)

If I use Vulkan as Graphic Backend, all Videos play, but I can't choose any resolution higher than 1080p.

If I use Angle with Vulkan, I get the resolution toggle, and all "older" videos work perfectly, but for all recent videos I get a blackscreen with Sound. Also the scribble preview is working.

My guess is that all videos encoded HEVC 10 are not working, so that affects all newer SLR Originals. If I go back through the catalogue older videos, I guess which are encoded different, play fine in high resolution.

My Flags in Brave are as follows:

Override software rendering list - Enabled
Vulkan - Disabled
Force enable WebGPU interop - Enabled
Default ANGLE Vulkan - Enabled
Vulkan from ANGLE - Enabled

In this specific combination all other videos work perfect.

Does anybody here have more experience with Linux Playback?

Scateck Hi! Could you please test this in Google Chrome? Brave is not officially supported, so we'd like to see if the issue is browser-specific.

Hi, same problem in Chrome. But to be fair this is not a you problem, but a Platform problem. Unfortunatly HEVC 10 under Linux seems to be a problem for many. Locally downloaded no problem, but in Browser I can't get it to work above 1080p. Seems to be a problem with Vulkan. I can see the HW Decoding is working, but can't get a picture, only Sound.

I can't speak for Linux but I have found that 10 bit encoded thumbnails do not load in both Pico 4 DeoVR app and Firefox desktop Windows 10

The videos play fine on both devices for me though - they must not be in 10 bit?

@Scateck try and find out the file encoding type that is failing to stream

From what I understand H.265/HEVC is the problem. It works perfect in Windows/Brave, but under Linux all Videos since the change to AV1 are not working. I think everything before is H.264 encoded and works fine.

Just to bring this to an end, I managed to get it to work today. I am not sure if this is thanks to recent updates or me setting the right flags in the right order, but here is the sequence that made it work.

I use Brave Origin in CachyOS.

Flags in brave:flags are as follows:

Vulkan - Enabled
Default ANGLE Vulkan - Enabled
Vulkan from ANGLE - Enabled

I am sure I tried this combination before and it did not work, but then I also disabled HW Acceleration in the Brave settings and Enabled it again, and now it is working Flawless.

Quick update here, latest Brave update v1.93.136 broke the playback, because they disabled the HEVC software decoder flag.

Enable the flag in brave:flags will restore playback.

Software HEVC/H.265 decoder --> Enable

This will still use HW Decoding, so all runs smooth, all it does for me is fix the Black Screen Issue with High Resolution Playback.

doublevr As far as I am aware this has nothing to do with you, apart from the choice of codec that is used for the videos.
